What is the opportunity?
In this role, you will be part of the Commercial Banking Sustainable Finance (SF) group which is responsible for the execution of the mid-market ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategy as it relates to client engagement, advisory and structuring across RBC’s Commercial Banking client base.The SF team develops financing solutions that support the requirements of Commercial Banking clients integrating a range of ESG initiatives, as well as structuring advice relating to Sustainable Finance loan products, including Green Loans (GL) and Sustainability Linked Loans (SLL).
We have responsibility for SF related matters on these transactions, from identifying fit with clients, informing them on product offerings, evaluating and establishing KPI/appropriate use of proceeds, reviewing loan documentation, coordinating with environmental risk as well as monitoring and compliance.
SF works closely with partners across the enterprise, including Capital Markets Sustainable Finance Group, Commercial Banking Strategy, Climate Strategy & Governance, Sustainability & Impact and Group Risk Management to position RBC as a market leader in sustainable (green, social, decarbonization) finance.
What will you do?- Perform comprehensive sustainability analysis of businesses, assessing ESG performance using industry-standard metrics (e.g. carbon emissions, water usage, etc.)
- Develop pitch books and client-related materials that communicate sustainable finance-related analysis and financial outcomes effectively (e.g. Green/Social/Sustainability and Sustainability-linked financial products)
- Monitor global sustainability and ESG themes, including regulatory changes, ESG frameworks, and market trends to provide actionable insights for clients.
- Assist in deal execution and coordinate with Relationship Managers, Finance, Asset Based Lending, Mergers & Acquisitions, Mid-Market Leverage and Infrastructure Finance and other groups to support clients' needs
- Support Finance team’s credit submissions, including research and due diligence as part of transaction processes
- Analyze quantitative data related to sustainable finance
- Review research and reports to distill insights to support client-facing thought-leadership
- Support development of internal strategy for Enterprise-level climate initiatives
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have- Undergraduate or master’s degree in business, accounting or finance
- 2+ years’ experience in either finance/investment management/management consulting and/or sustainability
- Knowledge of key trends, themes and issues related to ESG, sustainable finance and sustainability
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain relationships at all levels of organization
- Excellent relationship management skills, with experience engaging clients and stakeholders to drive collaborative outcomes
- Well organized and able to set priorities and devote appropriate attention to each assignment resulting in performing well under pressure, meeting time sensitive deadlines, prioritizing work and being able to work on multiple projects
- Ability to take initiative and function independently, balanced with strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proven quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Proficiency in sustainability frameworks and metrics (e.g. TCFD, SASB, GRI, UN SDG, Science-based targets) and tools for ESG data analysis
- Basic understanding of credit fundamentals such as financial statements analysis and risk assessment (to support due diligence, focusing on financial stability and ESG integration for borrowers and projects); prior credit experience is a plus but not required.
- Ability to commit to over and above regular work hours
- Experience with Bloomberg, S&P and third-party ESG data services such Sustainalytics and MSCI
- Knowledge of sustainability standards and frameworks including SASB and ISSB
- Experience in manufacturing, agri-food, or heavy industry sustainability
