The Opportunity

We are on the lookout for a passionate and enthusiastic Data Scientist/Machine Learning Engineer intern to join the Roche Product Development Group Centre of Excellence (COE). At the COE, we strive to harness innovative technology to revolutionize medical practices and improve patient outcomes.

As a Data Scientist/Machine Learning Engineer intern, you will have the unique opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams to craft, develop, and deploy structured, high-quality data solutions. Your focus will particularly be on applications of Large Language Models (LLMs), driving forward the mission of our PDG: to do what patients need next.

  • Collaborate with Data Scientists, ML engineers, MLOps/DevOps engineers, and multi-functional teams to take on sophisticated problems using modern NLP technologies, especially LLMs.
  • Assist in building and maintaining data and deployment pipelines for machine learning models.
  • Contribute to the development and deployment of ML models based on business and functional requirements, while performing performance tuning.
  • Document and effectively communicate design and implementation details.
  • Aid the COE AI team in technical decision-making and collaborate with clients and informatics departments to deploy scalable and maintainable solutions.
  • Engage in troubleshooting efforts and conduct root cause analysis when issues arise.

Who You Are:

  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering) or Life Sciences degree with significant computational experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of MLOps technologies (e.g., Sagemaker, Vertex AI, Kubeflow), cloud solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization with Docker.
  • Proven scripting and programming skills in Python or R, along with familiarity with git, bash, Linux, CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, Gitlab CI), and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Jira, Confluence).
  • Awareness of good coding practices, test-driven development, and the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making skills, good interpersonal and communication abilities, and a customer-focused approach.
  • Ability to work effectively with team members and virtual teams from diverse locations and cultural backgrounds,

Preferred:

  • Experience in scalable app deployment and clinical study data being a plus.

Additional Information:

  • Duration (12 months), work term (Full time) and will begin in (May, 2025)
  • Location: Based in Mississauga, Ontario.
  • Our team follows a hybrid work structure (minimum 3 days in the office).

This position is not eligible for relocation support.
