This role involves supporting Site Supervisors to ensure construction is executed efficiently, safely, and within budget, while adhering to the technical and regulatory requirements specific to these complex energy systems. The Construction Manager provides technical guidance to Site Supervisors, ensuring the successful integration of utility substation and BESS components, and serves as the primary point of contact for Site Supervisors, subcontractors, and clients.
By fostering effective communication and collaboration, the Construction Manager plays a critical role in achieving project success in this specialized field.
Requirements- Manage Project Execution
- Develop and maintain construction execution plans by organizing and controlling all aspects of on-site work for high-voltage and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
- Monitor construction progress, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions to ensure successful outcomes.
- Deliver projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Ensure adherence to all internal and external project processes and standards.
- Coordinate manpower and subcontractor allocations across multiple projects to maximize efficiency.
- Collaborate with Valard’s QA/QC Management Teams to provide adequate project support and maintain quality assurance.
- Act as a key liaison with project personnel, including coordinators, engineers, clients, and subcontractors.
- Lead daily planning sessions with on-site teams to align on project goals and schedules.
- Prepare comprehensive progress reports for the Senior Manager of Substation Construction, detailing project performance metrics.
- Optimize company fleet resources in collaboration with the Fleet Department to meet project demands.
- Training and Personnel Management
- Support Human Resources in managing union labor relations effectively.
- Oversee the training and development of field crews, supervisors, and foremen to build a skilled and safety-conscious workforce.
- Lead the recruitment of field supervisory staff to support project needs.
- Uphold and ensure compliance with the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics and relevant industry-specific professional standards.
- Estimating and Business Development
- Contribute to the estimating process by providing insights and expertise.
- Review estimate requirements with the Estimating Team to ensure alignment with project goals.
- Participate in reviewing and refining submittal packages for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of proposals, including deliverables, pricing, scheduling, and project-specific considerations such as BESS construction.
- Support the development and implementation of safety procedures and plans tailored to high-voltage and BESS projects.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing customers while identifying and fostering new business opportunities.
Knowledge:
- 10+ years of experience in the construction industry, with specific expertise in utility substation and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
- Journeyperson PSE/Electrician/Lineman designation required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
- Proven ability to manage large workgroups of 50+ people effectively.
- Comprehensive understanding of civil construction and various foundation types
- Experience in installation of structural support steel, high-voltage bus work, and apparatus installation in substations and BESS projects.
- Familiarity with major BESS vendors, such as Tesla and Fluence, including their systems and integration requirements.
- Deep knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, project scheduling, cost management, and quality control standards specific to high-voltage systems and energy storage solutions.
- Experience providing commissioning support services, including coordinating testing, troubleshooting, and energization processes for substations and BESS installations.
- Familiarity with union requirements, labor agreements, and their application in construction projects as applicable
- Position involves both field and office work, requiring flexibility to accommodate multiple shifts based on project schedules and contractual obligations.
Skills:
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to align construction activities with business objectives, including cost-effective execution of civil, electrical, and structural components.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with stakeholders and precise reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other project management and reporting tools to meet communication and documentation needs.
- Leadership abilities to guide, direct, and mentor Supervisors and Foremen on substation, BESS, and related civil and electrical scopes of work.
- Exceptional attention to detail to ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of civil works, high-voltage installations, and vendor-specific equipment integration.
- In-depth knowledge and expertise in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substations, structural steel, bus work, high-voltage apparatus, and BESS installations.
- Ability to collaborate with commissioning teams and provide hands-on support during the testing and energization phases of projects.
