Humber River Health (“HRH”) is a prominent 1.8 million square foot, fully digital acute care facility in Canada, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and catering to a wide range of medical needs. It serves a population of over 850,000 individuals residing in the northwest Greater Toronto Area.HRH operates 722 acute inpatient beds at the Wilson site, with over 4000 staff, approximately 800 physicians and over 1,000 volunteers. HRH also includes the Reactivation Care Centres (“RCCs”) at the Finch and Church Campuses which represent a unique partnership among multiple hospitals in the GTA with a focus on delivery of specialised care to patients who have been designated as Alternative Level of Care.

We have developed advanced patient flow and care monitoring tools supported by the Command Centre, enabling us to use real-time data feeds from across the Hospital to improve patient flow, patient safety and outcomes.

Department and Program Overview
Recognized as Ontario’s busiest Emergency Department (“ED”), HRH serves over 130,000 patients annually and approximately 375 patients each day, with more than 75 of these patients arriving by ambulance. This is almost double the number of ambulances received by neighbouring hospitals.
The diversity of HRH’s community is its strength and pride. It also brings to light the multifaceted health inequities that many face. More specifically, HRH serves a community with:
- a greater prevalence of chronic conditions compared to the rest of Ontario,
- a greater population of seniors aged 80+ years, many who live alone;
- limited access to mental healthcare providers despite a high rate of mental health disorders; and
- a lower number of physicians surrounded by high primary care needs.
HRH has set provincial benchmarks for quality care, driven by a culture of innovation and the strategic implementation of digital health technologies.
The ED is lighting new ways in healthcare – and is just getting started.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will provide medical, administrative and strategic leadership to ensure the ED care delivery model achieves high quality emergency care that evolves to match the needs of patients, the department, the hospital, and the community.They will do this by collaborating with ED nursing leadership, emergency physicians, and hospital administration. The successful candidate will also participate in clinical practice in Emergency Medicine.
As the Chief of Department, the successful candidate will drive excellence in patient care through strategic leadership and planning, promote quality improvement and patient safety, manage and develop a talented team of health care professionals and ensure efficient resourcing allocation and utilization.
As the Medical Director, they will work in partnership with the Program Director of Emergency Services and be jointly accountable for the leadership and management of the Clinical Program.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
As an excellent communicator and strong advocate for the HRH mission, vision and goals, the successful candidate will collaborate with other departments and actively participate in a variety of departmental and administrative meetings and initiatives.
The successful candidate must have at least five (5) years of clinical expertise in Emergency Medicine. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to lead in a healthcare setting, work well with others and collaborate at a department, program and organizational level.Participation in the HRH physician leadership and engagement program is also required. Strategic management experience, with the ability to set and meet targets, understand and interpret analytics and undertake significant change management, is also required.
Candidates must be a qualified medical practitioner and a member of, or eligible for membership, with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates must also have certification in Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or Emergency Medicine Certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP(EM)), or equivalent qualifications.
As a member of TAHSN, HRH provides placements for medical learners at all levels. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in education initiatives, including the teaching, supervision and mentoring of medical learners. Applicants must have or be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Rank of Assistant Professor in an appropriate clinical department at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
