POSITION SUMMARY:
The Technical Writer is responsible to develop and maintain comprehensive and accurate technical information for use in bus service manuals and operator’s guides. Under the direction of the Sr. Technical Editor, you will develop service and operation information as required for manual publishing.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Perform service and or operator manual production writing work according to established procedures ensuring work tasks are completed within schedule deadlines.
- Research and understand the required aspects of a component, system and subsystem which is to be described and represented within the manuals. This will require you to interpret and understand associated source data such as BOMs, technical summaries, vendor documentation, photos, and technical diagrams and schematics.
- Contact any engineering staff or parts suppliers to verify accuracy or obtain new information if required. Regular research staff will initiate when info required from parts suppliers however, it is important that Writing staff review information for completeness and accuracy and contact suppliers direct when further clarification or info is required.
- Develop new service information by extracting, translating, re-writing and transforming complex source data into simple English instructional text using established styles in current templates.
- Review text for incorporation or revising all applicable safety standards and codes related to the subject matter is required.
- Analyze and identify illustrating requirements for new text.
- Follow departmental technical writing/editing practices and procedures.
- Work with Sr Technical Editor in a positive and cooperative manner to successfully meet all set project priorities and deadlines.
- Report and supply possible solutions for any manual content problems or deficiencies encountered during a project.
- Perform/direct quality assurance checks on all work.
- Perform effectively within the Writing Team promoting a positive and cooperative environment.
- Certification/diploma in technical writing or a combination of education and experience.
- Excellent command of English language both written and oral.
- Experience writing instructional information such as technical user guides and service manuals.
- Excellent knowledge of technical document lifecycle and format standards.
- Min 2 years’ experience as a Technical Writer in the Automotive, Heavy Equipment or Aerospace industry.
- Experience working with engineers and technicians effectively to extract/understand complex systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Effective decision making skills.
- Effective skills working in a collaborative team.
- Strong ability in developing and working in authoring/publishing applications such as Adobe FrameMaker, InDesign and Adobe Acrobat.
- Excellent knowledge of standard computer business applications such as MS Office and file management skills.
- English/French bilingual capability is an asset.
