Position Overview:

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Maintenance Technician Facilities Management within the Facilities and Energy Management Department. Reporting to the Supervisor, Corporate Building Maintenance the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining City facilities.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Perform general maintenance work such as drywall, taping, painting, insulation, vapour barriers, flooring, roofing, eaves troughs, downspouts, soffits, flashings, caulking, windows, man-doors, automatic door operators, roll up door systems, and hardware.
  • Performs hands-on in rough and finish carpentry including cabinet making, framing, and trim.
  • Performs maintenance work in masonry including blocks, bricks, and re-pointing, concrete floors, foundations, sidewalks, and curbs.
  • Assist in the repairs of all facility components including, but not limited to, HVAC systems, electrical, and exhaust systems.
  • Monitor computerized building automation systems and report deficiencies.
  • Maintain building and systems records including but not limited to water system tests.
  • Assist with the development of preventive maintenance (P.M.) standards.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and tracking via electronic means, P.M. and up-grades to all facilities/components.
  • Accurately estimate costs for time and materials to carry out various maintenance tasks.
  • Comply with City regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Remove obstacles hazardous to employees or the public.
  • Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, damages, etc.
  • Demonstrate initiative to resolve issues with focus on quality customer service.
  • Ability to work within a maintenance management (MMS) system, work order and asset management (WAM) system, purchasing, and time keeping systems.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of material for delivery to various departments.
  • Interpret/read blue prints and CAD drawings.
  • Perform building inspections and report findings.
  • Inspection and respond to requests in the areas of asbestos, mold, including but not limited to abatement and cleaning.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements
  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a Grade 12 diploma and 2 to 3 years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings such as drywall, flooring, roofing, doors and glass repairs. Candidates with equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid Class G drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their license is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Must be a reliable self-starter, able to make decisions and function with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must be able to physically perform strenuous work (e.g. climbing, lifting, bending, walking, in restricted space and working at heights).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code/Accessibility/Life Safety Code.
  • Knowledge of electronic Preventative Maintenance systems.
  • Familiar with HVAC, electrical and exhaust systems.
  • Able to read and interpret blue prints and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work co-operatively with other team members.
  • Excellent customer service skills in order to deal with staff and the public in a cordial manner.
  • Willingness to successfully complete asbestos, mold and confined space certification.
  • Knowledge of asbestos and mold abatement procedures for all three class types.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and be familiar with the monitoring of building control systems.
  • Willingness to successfully complete First Aid, CPR, AED, and man-lift training certificates.
  • Journeyman qualifications for one or more of the trades (e.g. carpentry, masonry, etc.).
  • Ability to be licensed to operate assigned equipment, man-lifts, articulating, etc.

Hours of work

Five (5) consecutive eight (8) hour days, Monday to Friday scheduled between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. On-call will be a requirement of this position.

Pay/Salary

CUPE 241 Grade 4: $31.03 per hour
