The Research II, Population Health Analytics, is a provincial role of senior analyst which plays an integral role in the achievement of surveillance and research initiative within the Public Health Surveillance and Informatics. Reporting to the Manager, Population Health Analytics, the Research II is responsible and accountable for providing methodological and analytical support on all aspects related to public health surveillance such as indicator development/ identification, standardization of methods, identifying data sources and data analyses.

The incumbent provides advance data management, analytical and reporting functions, and dashboard development support, and applies research principles, frameworks, concepts, methods and processes to address surveillance, health status assessment as well as population and public health issues to inform decision-making.

This position establishes and maintains positive relationships with key zone, provincial and administrative staff and consults with clients (e.g., multi-disciplinary teams of physicians, public health clinical leads, nurses, quality performance improvement, knowledge management, analyst) to fully understand and define the service/query/information requested, determine appropriate methodology, data types, and sources to use, completes the analysis, provides interpretation and recommendations, and presents the findings/information in the format requests.

The position is temporary for six months. This is a provincial program and location of the successful candidate is negotiable between Calgary and Edmonton and may be eligible to work hybrid or remote within Alberta.

As a Research II, you will be responsible for coordinating research activities which generate and disseminate new knowledge that assists with advancing the understanding of health disciplines and various health and medical concerns. Working with the principal investigator, you will assist with the study design and development of research protocols, determine appropriate data collection methods and measurement procedures, interpret results, develop recommendations and coordinate study approvals.

You will also contribute to grant submissions and budgeting, conduct literature reviews and environmental scans and provide day-to-day oversight of research studies/projects.

Master's degree in a health or science related field. Registration with applicable professional association or college where required.

Master's Degree in a health or science-related area such as such as epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, computer science. Minimum of 3 years of experience in a population health-related field. Ability to understand epidemiological issues and to communicate effectively with a broad variety of people with different skills and expertise.
Strong skills working with datasets, including health-related administrative datasets (e.g., DAD, NACRS, Physician billing claims). Strong skills using the appropriate statistical software which may include SAS, R, as well as basic to intermediate programming knowledge in SQL, Python.

Ability to develop interactive dashboards in web reporting tools such as Tableau and working knowledge to design clear procedures for collecting cleaning, standardizing, and reporting data. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development.

Highly proficient in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills. Strong ability to plan, organize and manage short and long-term plans and projects. Proven ability to collaborate with administrators, researchers, and planners.

Demonstrated ability to work well in a high-paced team setting and independently.
