What You'll Be Doing
This role provides valuable support and guidance to management, personnel, subtrades, and consultants in administering, implementing, and maintaining Mattina Mechanical Limited (MML)’s health and safety program.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor the safety performance of all on-site workers to ensure that they work safely
- Encourage and educate employees to take precautions and adhere to safety rules to protect themselves from injury and the equipment they use from damage
- Participate in and/or provide direction to others conducting incident investigations for all injuries, accidents, near misses and property damages. Identify the root cause(s) and follow-up actions to ensure implementation of identified corrective actions and preventable action.
- Review incident summary reports and recommended action to the Health and Safety Specialist when accident trends are unfavourable. Ensure reporting to the General Contractor (GC), WSIB, and Ministry of Labour (MOL) is completed as required.
- Provide internal or arrange external safety training for employees and maintain an up-to-date Training Matrix.
- Conduct and maintain job hazard analyses (JHA) with managers for MML work activities
- Ensure Safety Checks are reviewed with the company site team and the General/Subcontractors as required
- Review GC/Subcontractor Performance Reviews as required
- Ensure KHA’s are signed by company employees during orientations
- Complete and maintain Violence and Harassment Risk Assessments with managers for MML work locations
- Ensure SDS of all controlled products on site are always up-to-date and available to the workers.
- Monitor MML health and safety inspections and provide support to project teams on any issues.
- Act as a liaison with the government, WSIB, ambulance services and hospitals, management, subcontractors and workers regarding aspects of health and safety on and off the job.
- Create and maintain (yearly) project Emergency Response Plans with managers. Ensure completion of task specific response plans (i.e. Fall Protection, Confined Space, etc.)
- Complete preparation work for upcoming crane lifts and confined space work (i.e. traffic controls, door location etc)
- Ensure daily/weekly/monthly H&S forms are being conducted as per MML policy.
- Perform environmental assessments (i.e. ergonomic assessment, noise level surveys, etc.) upon request
- Coordinate and conduct the following according to MML policy:
- Employee Safety Orientations, Site Orientations, Safety Talks, Safety Inspections, Audits, Joint Health and Safety Committee Meetings, emergency response drills.
- Create and distribute weekly Toolbox Safety Talks.
- Ensure health and safety policies and other pertinent information are updated and posted on Company safety board(s).
- Assist with health and safety prequalification requirements
- Advise on appropriate protective equipment and on the cost of implementing changes.
- Maintain an inventory list of equipment and company provided PPE purchased
- Establish inspection and calibration schedules for all safety related items to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with current regulations.
- Coordinate the Work Reintegration Program (Return to Work) including WSIB assessments & treatment, return to work plans, injury management plans, establishing modified duties, coordination with rehabilitation personnel and supporting the injured worker effectively back to pre-injury status.
- Coordinate the company’s disability management program including any required accommodation plans
- Develop new and revised H&S control documents as required, as well as proposed methods for resolving or improving worker safety.
- Maintain the company's ISO and COR certification and assist in tracking and resolving non-conformities from previous Safety Audits
- Performs other duties as required
Requirements
Skills & Qualifications:
This position will require analytical thought and insight into complex work and safety procedures. The successful candidate must demonstrate critical thought in situations requiring decisive decisions and actions. Skills and qualifications include:
- Post-secondary education in Health & Safety is an asset.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a health and safety role.
- Experience in a health & safety role within the construction industry is preferred
- Knowledge and work experience with health and safety regulations in the construction industry is preferred.
- Health and Safety certifications (e.g., OHSM, NCSO, CRST) are considered an asset.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification is an asset.
- Construction Safety Certification is an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment, construction processes, and terminology.
- Must be up to date on legal and technological developments in health and safety.
- Good negotiation, tact, and diplomacy skills to ensure the implementation of OH&S legislation and company policies.
- Must be able to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
