Alexana Engineering is a small and dynamic environmental engineering firm located in Toronto. We were founded in 2022 and are currently four employees in size. Joining the company at this stage also means you’ll have an impact on the company culture and growth over the next few years.
Our primary projects include Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, soil and groundwater remediation, Record of Site Conditions, and Risk Assessments. We are looking for an Environmental Engineer to join our growing team. We are based in Toronto, Ontario but all employees have the option to work from home or office as and when needed.Our current expectation is one day a week in the office for office meetings and cross-training of tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct and manage projects in the indoor and outdoor environments, including Phase I/II ESAs (O. Reg. 153/04), Site remediation, Excess Soil Management (O. Reg. 406/19), and Record of Site Condition
- Provide regulatory guidance and oversight of activities conducted under Ontario Regulation (O.Reg.) 153/04 and/or O.Reg. 406/19.
- Prepare work plans, proposals, change orders, memos and/or technical reports for various stages of the project. Technical reports will include Phase I and Phase II ESA reports in accordance with both CSA and O.Reg. 153/04 requirements, Excess Soils reporting completed in accordance with O.Reg. 406/19.
- Provide peer review of technical reports, lab analyses and other supporting documentation.
- Conduct quality assurance checks on data, analysis, and reports.
- Assist in project management tasks, such as scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Manage the technical, schedule and budget aspects of projects.
- Coordinate field activities, including liaison with subcontractors, clients and management.
- Act as a resource both virtually and in the field for projects when required.
- Some field work may be required depending on scheduling and/or expertise of yourself and existing field staff. Specific field tasks can include: soil, groundwater, and vapour sampling, groundwater monitoring, surveying, drilling and installation of monitoring wells, and direction of soil remediations.
- Monitor project progress and ensure that project milestones are achieved.
- Interact with clients to understand project requirements, discuss findings, and provide recommendations.
- Conduct project administration tasks, including timesheet generation and project invoicing.
- Participate in project management meetings, office meetings, health, and safety inspections.

- Supervising, providing technical guidance to, and mentoring of junior staff.
- Building and maintaining positive working relationships with key clients.
- Maintain flexibility and adaptability to scheduling changes and occasional overtime or evening work.
- Consistently maintain professionalism and objectivity while working with colleagues and clients who require varying degrees of support.
- Travel between worksites locally and provincially as required.

Experience / Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or Science
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) Ontario or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) Ontario designation
- 7- 10 years of experience in environmental engineering, with at least 4 years in a consulting environment
- Comfortable working on job sites (including but not limited to construction sites, gas stations, around traffic and heavy equipment).
- Experience with drilling, test pitting, monitoring well installation, soil and groundwater remediations.
- Experience with soil, groundwater and vapour sampling.
- Experience writing Phase I and Phase II ESA reports to both CSA and O.Reg. 153/04 standards.

- Proficient in use of MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.) and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc).
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures/legislation per Ministry of Labour and Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Highly organized with ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands.
- Self-motivated with ability to plan and execute tasks with minimal supervision.
- Willing to undertake field work year-round and travel throughout the GTA and Southern Ontario.
- Must have a valid Class G driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Physical ability to undertake work requiring moderate physical exertion such as walking over uneven terrain while carrying equipment and/or materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to legally work in Canada.
