We are looking for a Manager, Taxation to join our high performing Taxation department to assist with leading the Commodity tax function for The Canada Life Assurance Company (“CLA”), a Canadian Life Insurance company, and its subsidiaries.
As a Manager, Taxation, your role will be responsible for the review and analysis of commodity tax compliance matters to contribute to our goal of maintaining accurate commodity taxes (GST/HST/PST). As a mentor and coach, you’ll cultivate a dynamic learning environment, empowering team members to grow.
Reporting to the Director, Taxation, you will collaborate in investigating, researching, and analyzing commodity tax matters for the purpose of tax compliance, tax audits, special transactions and/or tax planning.
What you will do:
- Manage and oversee the filing of GST/HST/PST Tax returns for Financial Institutions and non financial institutions.
- Analyze, research and document commodity tax considerations that arose from the preparation and review of the above returns
- Assist in responding to tax audit queries including investigating, researching and analyzing the tax issues and information required
- Collaborate with the corporate tax team to ensure internal and external structuring transactions are implemented accurately
- Identify, track and report any potential financial risks or issues and work closely with the management team to implement appropriate solutions
- Research and respond business unit commodity tax questions
- Develop and maintain Commodity tax compliance procedures and risk assessment frameworks, to ensure effective tax management
- Development, coaching and training of staff members
What you will bring:
- A bachelor’s degree in commerce, accounting, taxation or a related field
- Completion of a professional accounting designation (or equivalent)
- 4-6 years of experience in commodity tax, preferably in the Financial Institutions environment.
- Completion or currently enrolled in the CPA HST/HST In-Depth Tax Course
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple demands and competing priorities to achieve required results
- Ability to work independently and also work collaboratively in a team environment
- Passion for developing others and developing a high- performance culture
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Excel and experience in SAP is an asset
The base salary for this position is between $74,500- $137,900 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
