Temporary, Full-Time (1 Year Contract)

Position Summary

The Northern Ontario Emergency Department (ED) Research Assistant (RA) will support the operationalization of research projects in the Emergency Department at North Bay Regional Health Centre while working closely with the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) Emergency Medicine Research Team.

The RA will assist in multiple research studies by screening and determining eligibility of patients, conducting medical chart reviews, and entering data in various databases. The successful candidate will develop collaborative research approaches, facilitate and coordinate the submission and review processes of clinical research, support the ongoing implementation of projects, and monitor project progress for physicians, researchers, clinicians, and scientists involved in research.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • A University degree in a relevant field from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • University or college graduate who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be a first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data entry.
  • Understanding of regulatory framework and research funding opportunities and guidelines is considered an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Excellent organizational skills including time-management.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, and Excel), databases, Adobe Illustrator, Meditech and other specialized software.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills for internal and external communication; excellent skills in written and spoken English (French is an asset); exceptional spelling and grammatical skills with advanced editing and proofreading skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Professional demeanour, people skills, and the ability to interact and communicate with all levels of support, administrative, management, clinicians and researchers, and study participants.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, a diversified workload, rapidly changing priorities, and challenging deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Critical thinking ability with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety.

Selection Process

Candidates:

  • Are new entrants into the work force, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field;
  • Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship;
  • Are at least 18 years of age; and
  • Reside, and be legally entitled to work, in Canada.
