Overview:

The Equipment Maintenance Operations Manager, based in Edmonton and reporting to the Director, Corporate Assets is responsible for overseeing the business and support functions within the equipment maintenance division. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the efficient, reliable, and cost-effective operation of equipment maintenance activities across the organization.

The successful candidate will lead a team focused on optimizing maintenance processes, improving asset reliability, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. In addition, the manager will be responsible for resource planning, budgeting, performance analysis, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

This role requires strong leadership skills, a strategic mindset, and a hands-on approach to operational management. The Equipment Maintenance Operations Manager will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including operations to ensure alignment with organizational goals and deliver high-quality maintenance support.

Responsibilities:

Safety Leadership
  • Champion and uphold the corporate safety program, promoting a culture of safety excellence.
  • Lead safety investigations, ensuring timely incident notifications, thorough analysis, and completion of corrective actions.
  • Conduct and validate workplace inspections, safety meetings, and job safety documentation (JSA/FLHA).
  • Ensure regulatory compliance for certifications (e.g., cranes) and training across all maintenance personnel and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with safety advisors and verify subcontractor safety documentation is complete and updated annually.
Team & Culture Leadership
  • Hire, onboard, and retain a high-performing team aligned with company culture and values.
  • Conduct performance reviews, support career development, and ensure training requirements are up to date.
  • Promote cross-training and mentorship within the maintenance workforce to ensure a resilient and well-rounded team.
  • Foster strong relationships with field operations and project management teams to ensure alignment and collaboration.
Operational Oversight
  • Manage daily maintenance operations, including work order systems, preventive maintenance scheduling, and equipment availability.
  • Participate in project start-up meetings to align equipment planning with operational schedules and scope.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts within the maintenance department to enhance processes, performance, and reliability.
Financial Management
  • Prepare and manage budgets related to labor, parts, supplies, contractors, and major repairs.
  • Track actual spending against forecasted budgets and provide monthly cost updates.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives and set internal thresholds for spending reviews.
  • Approve expense reports for direct reports and monitor subsistence charge submissions.
  • Collaborate closely with maintenance team members to align financial planning with operational needs and priorities.
Fleet & Equipment Oversight
  • Review and ensure completeness of PM plans, repair logs, rental inspections, and equipment deployment packages.
  • Collaborate with external vendors (e.g., Finning) to manage undercarriage health, warranty tracking, and component planning.
  • Support planning for major equipment repairs, warranty returns, and parts core returns.
  • Monitor and control parts and labour expenditures to ensure alignment with year-to-date budget targets.
  • Provide recommendations on equipment retirement and fleet cycling strategies to optimize asset utilization and maximize recovery value.
  • Develop and implement a dedicated shop rebuild program focused on major component overhauls.
Reporting & Compliance
  • Lead the development and implementation of accurate service and maintenance documentation processes.
  • Maintain and distribute action logs from key operational and vendor meetings.
  • Ensure disciplined reporting of service activities, safety metrics, and administrative data across all maintenance functions.
Strategic Leadership
  • Participate as an active member of the management team, contributing to strategic planning and operational alignment.
  • Promote decision-making based on cost/benefit analysis, resource optimization, and company-wide objectives.
  • Uphold corporate standards, values, and professional conduct in all interactions.
  • Represent the department by leading key updates and communications during the quarterly operations and quarterly maintenance meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience within a maintenance environment, preferably within the heavy civil industry.
  • Strong understanding of applicable environmental and occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, or similar project management tools.
  • Post-secondary education in Civil or Mechanical Engineering Technology/Technician is strongly preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional service to both internal stakeholders and external partners.
