Quality Assurance Engineer/Tester (1 year FT to start, remote in Canada)

apartmentRadical I/O Technology Inc. placeVancouver scheduleFull-time calendar_month

Hiya! We’re Radical I/O, a people-first enterprise software development consultancy and lab that develops technology with purpose. We work with cities and purpose-driven organizations to create meaningful, data-driven solutions that provide easy access to information, exactly when and where people need it.

We are helping our spin-off company, SimpliCity Digital, hire for their first QA role! SimpliCity Digital is a Vancouver-based govtech startup that recently launched their SaaS platform with their first early adopter municipal customer (District of North Vancouver).

SimpliCity is the only composable CMS that unifies municipal digital services. SimpliCity's platform is an innovative combination of a flexible API-first headless content management system (CMS), a content creation web console, an integration services layer, and a highly performant, Canadian cloud-hosted website publishing and hosting platform on Microsoft Azure.

Their goal is to support municipal digital transformation initiatives that improve online service delivery and empower communities.

SimpliCity is looking for a passionate and detail-oriented Quality Assurance Engineer/Tester to join the team and help ensure the highest quality for our innovative municipal solutions. If you love problem-solving and thrive in a collaborative environment, we’d love to hear from you!

The Position:

As a Quality Assurance Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of SimpliCity Digital as they continue to scale their platform. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a fast-growing govtech startup, where you'll have the freedom and responsibility to create and implement QA processes from the ground up.

Your work will be integral in ensuring the quality and reliability of SimpliCity's platform, which supports municipalities in their digital transformation initiatives.

In this role, you will be expected to take ownership of the entire QA function, from defining test strategies to building automated testing frameworks. You’ll need to be comfortable navigating the unknowns, finding creative solutions to complex problems, and working independently to meet project goals.

This is the perfect opportunity for someone who enjoys a challenge, embraces uncertainty, and is motivated by the opportunity to make a significant impact on a product’s success.

You’ll be working closely with cross-functional teams but will be given the autonomy to design and evolve the QA processes as needed. If you thrive in a startup environment, love to take initiative, and enjoy creating solutions and processes where none currently exist, this role is for you!

What You'll Do:

  • Develop Test Plans and Cases: Create and execute comprehensive test strategies and test cases for our platform and customer project implementations.
  • Manual and Automated Testing: Perform both manual and automated testing across multiple environments (web apps, websites, and APIs) to identify bugs and issues.
  • Test Automation and Setup: Write and maintain automated test scripts using tools like Selenium or Cypress, and continuously improve our automated testing framework once in place. Note: You’ll be recommending and setting up our testing tools with our engineers too.
  • Defect Management: Identify, log, and track defects using Jira and other tools, collaborating with leadership, design, and development team members for resolution.
  • Web Accessibility Testing: Ensure customer web projects (and eventually our platform) meets web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, by conducting accessibility testing and ensuring the user experience is inclusive.
  • CI/CD Integration and Setup: Integrate automated tests into a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline to ensure a smooth release process, including working with our engineering team to set this up.
  • Collaborate: Work in Agile/Scrum teams, providing clear updates on QA progress, and supporting team members to ensure smooth, quality-focused delivery.

Hiring Timeline & Details:

This posting will remain open from Wed, Jan 8 until Tues Jan 14. We aim to run interviews the week of Jan 20 to then make an offer soon thereafter for a start date of Mon, Feb 3 or Mon, Feb 10.

Our team works a 4-day work week, from Monday to Thursday, with 8 effort hours per day for a total of 32 hours. This is a fully remote position, where you will be working from your own home from anywhere in Canada (sorry, candidates physically located outside of Canada will not be considered).

However, if you do not reside in BC, then the majority of your hours would need to shift in order to overlap within our Pacific Time Zone (in the 9am PST to 7pm PST range).

Our hiring budget is within the $40/hr to $50/hr range, depending on your skills and experience.

This is initially a 1 year term, full-time employee role. However, if we all work together well and the company continues to grow, then you would be first in line to receive a permanent job offer for this position should you want it.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Experience:

  • 4+ years of full-time experience in QA, with expertise in manual and automated testing of web app and website frontends and backend APIs.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1, 2.2, etc) and experience in testing web accessibility compliance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.
  • A strong understanding of software testing methodologies, SDLC, and Agile processes.
  • Extremely detail oriented and organized.
  • Great communicator (particularly written) and collaborator.

  • Relevant certifications (preferred but not mandatory), such as: ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) Certified Tester or similar certifications like CSQA (Certified Software Quality Analyst) or CSTE (Certified Software Tester), Accessibility-related certifications.
  • You’ve worked on government-related (municipal/local, provincial, federal) projects and products before.
  • Experience developing with JavaScript, ReactJS and NodeJS.

Who You Are:

  • You thrive in ambiguity and love solving complex problems.
  • You enjoy tackling challenges and embracing uncertainty.
  • You are motivated by the opportunity to make a significant impact on a product’s success.
  • You love learning continuously and taking on new challenges.
  • You're a team player, always willing to help your teammates succeed.
  • You are independent, professional, and quality-focused.
  • You value community and have a desire to make a difference through your work.

Additionally, you currently live in Canada and are authorized to work full-time in Canada for any employer, including people who are in Canada on valid working holiday visas and post-graduate work permits.

Our Culture:

At SimpliCity (and Radical), we value diversity, curiosity, and the drive to continuously learn and grow. We're all about fostering a culture of respect and acceptance, where everyone feels valued and supported. Our goal is to not just build great products, but to build a great place to work.

We embrace a flexible work environment that allows you to balance work with life and other commitments, and we strongly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in the tech industry. Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications, if you’re passionate about what you do and have related skills and/or experience, we want to hear from you.

We particularly love working with people who are purpose/value-driven, and who are accepting, open-minded, communicative, and down-to-earth. SimpliCity is woman-led by Founder & CEO Briana Sim; therefore, inclusive and flexible hiring processes and working conditions are important to us.

We hope they are important to you too!
