Job Summary

The primary purpose for the Associate Director role is to ensure effective Enterprise operational risk programs are in place for Scenario Analysis, External Events, and assist with related programs such as Change Risk Assessments, Operational Resilience and other operational risk programs as needed; including Thematic Reviews to ensure programs are aligned to regulatory requirements such as OSFI E-21.

This role reports to the Director, Risk Practice Management Strategy to provide operational risk support in facilitating the development, maintenance and monitoring the effectiveness of the operational risk framework and sound risk management practices across all of RBC’s business platforms and corporate functions.

Further this role works to coordinate regional requirements, and alignment to the Enterprise. This role will also work with the wider Operational Risk Practice Strategy team to support the building out and running of respective practices.

Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The GRM Operational Risk Shared Services Team is responsible for the development, strategic direction, maintenance and monitoring effectiveness of the operational risk program and associated tools and methodology. The primary purpose for the Associate Director role is to ensure effective Enterprise operational risk programs are in place for Scenario Analysis, External Events, and assist with related programs such as Change Risk Assessments, Operational Resilience and other operational risk programs as needed; including Thematic Reviews to ensure programs are aligned to regulatory requirements such as OSFI E-21.

What will you do?
  • Support Scenario Analysis, External Events, and assist with related programs such as Change Risk Assessments and Operational Resilience practice goals, objectives, and deliverables for the team based on ORM and Stakeholder priorities,
  • Ensure practice deliverables are met with timeliness and accuracy (e.g., reporting, testing, etc.),
  • Adopt strategic directions of the practices and implement with stakeholders, policies/standard and in tooling and processes,
  • Enable continual improvement of practices, in consultation with and alignment to Risk Practice strategy, including actively seek to simplify requirements where appropriate to enable consistent practices,
  • Develop and evolve the practices to support enterprise risk management,
  • Provide expert advice on operational risk, leveraging insights from operational risk reporting and analytics, independent reviews and industry perspective to ensure RBC’s operational risk practices maintains a forward-looking view that considers both managed and emerging risks,
  • Monitor compliance to policy, and communicating exceptions to Advisory & Oversight (A&O) for liaison with 1st LOD and other impacted parties,
  • Actively support business partners in all lines of defence such as business operational leads, the A&O and Centre of Governance,
  • Ensure stakeholders are enabled with appropriate operational risk tools and resources to react proactively regarding the risk practices,
  • Prioritize and facilitate responses to queries and ad hoc requests coming from internal and external stakeholders,
  • Support other areas of the team, as required.

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have:

  • 5+ years of experience in risk management with deep knowledge of banking regulatory requirements and best practices related to global risk management practices,
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment, managing a diverse group of executive stakeholders,
  • Highly proficient in stakeholder management, change management, strategy development, people management,
  • Strong ability to influence, interpret feedback, motivate, and effect change,
  • Expert in risk management methodologies.

Nice to Have:

  • Graduate degree or designation / certification associated with Risk Management,
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to partner with multiple stakeholders across a matrixed environment,
  • Direct operational risk experience,
