Toronto - Archaeological Field Technician

Reporting to the Manager of Archaeological Consulting Services, the Archaeological Field Tech is responsible for supporting the archaeology team with undertaking Stage 2 through 4 archaeological field investigations, processing (washing) of artifacts and other logistical support activities associated with archaeological field and lab work.
Field work is conducted across southern Ontario with staff working extended periods
away.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Regular Duties- Conducting archaeological field work according to the current Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM) Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists, including but not limited to survey, field walking, excavation of test pits/ units and monitoring of mechanically excavated units
- Field identification of artifacts ensuring that they have been collected and labelled according to provenience
- Field identification of cultural features and ensuring that they have been recorded and/or protected as needed
- Assisting with field logistics including setting in test units and maintenance of field equipment
- Washing and preliminary sorting of artifacts
- Prepared to work away from home for periods of time
- Support and assist Field Directors
- Work with local Indigenous community representatives
- Keep health & safety as a primary focus during field work and travel
- Assisting with background research, report writing and analysis depending on skill set and relevant experiences
- Assisting with material culture analysis
- Ability to carry out strenuous physical activity, including prolonged walking in agricultural fields and forested environments, repetitive tasks (e.g., shovelling and screening soils) and heavy lifting (20-40 lbs)
- Ability to work:
- Flexible hours and willing to participate in out-of-town projects
- Outdoors for prolonged periods, sometimes in inclement weather
- In a team environment and take direction from Field Directors, Project Managers, and Principals of LHC
- Attention to detail and ability to follow specific directions
- Diploma or degree in archaeology or related discipline is preferred but not required. Students are encouraged to apply.
- Familiarity and/or experience working with the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists is an asset
- Previous experience is an asset
- A valid Ontario class ‘G’ License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract is preferred, but not required
- Obtaining and maintaining security clearances as required by LHC clients
- $24.00 - $30.00 / hour (plus 4% vacation pay) Commensurate with experience (Pay Band Level 1)
