Assistant Director of Shelters
Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

The Assistant Director of Shelters, under the direction of the Director of Shelters, will contribute to the successful operations and service delivery of Homes First shelters by effectively planning and organizing shelter programs in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures and legislation.They will assist with existing partnerships, like the City of Toronto and other stakeholders, to build capacity by aiding in the development and implementations of strategies that establish and maintain shelter services in The Greater Toronto Area which address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness or precarious housing.
Job Responsibilities:
- Monitor and ensure shelter programs and service delivery, to ensure compliance with program requirements and quality assurance and recommend solutions for non-compliance
- Work collaboratively with the management team, City of Toronto stakeholders, and external agencies to identify and implement improvements on an ongoing basis as needed
- Focus on process improvement to align with best practices
- Ensure management team performance by conducting performance reviews; ensuring related staff training is completed; prioritizing and assigning responsibilities and duties to team members and communicating job expectations
- Support management with supervision of a unionized workforce and ensure that all staff work within the context of the Collective Agreement
- Provide assistance in developing program and organizational plans
- Evaluate new and existing programs and services in relation to their value and efficacy
- Assist with creating company-wide policies and procedures, ensuring they meet or exceed compliance requirements and best practice standards
- Help with the maintenance of both short and long-term strategic plans in accordance with established goals and objectives
- Ensure effective communications with other departments within Homes First Society as well as with external agencies and stakeholders
- Assume functions of the Manager and/or Director in that person’s absence, as directed
- Support with data collection, evaluation and development
- May be required to work outside of regular work hours
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in related field or equivalent in education and experience
- At least 5 years’ experience working with people who are homeless, under-housed and dealing with addictions and mental illness
- General knowledge of community services and homelessness programs, health promotion strategies, social determinants of health, harm reduction, public policy, practices and issues, the political environment, and current housing and homelessness issues
- Demonstrated experience working in a unionized environment
- Knowledge of and demonstrated systems thinking ability and change management design, process and implementation strategies
- Strong formal and informal leadership skills
- Ability to initiate and model positive change
- Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
- Ability to effectively prioritize work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
- Excellent communication, organization and time management skills
- Knowledge of relevant laws, standards and guidelines
- Knowledge of resources and services available in the community
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and organization skills
- Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset
- Computer literacy, including the ability to access and use a variety of information system tools to support the delivery of the project to do so at a sophisticated level
- Ability to work outside of regularly scheduled hours for different activities such as training and events
- The successful candidate will be required to work where smoking is present
