Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Manager - Food & Nutrition Services, or designate is responsible for the preparation of foods, including baking for residents, staff, patrons, special functions and ancillary services.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for preparation and cooking of regular, therapeutic and texture modified foods.
  • Ensures the correct portioning and attractive presentation of foods.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of standardized recipes.
  • Responsible for sanitary food handling and proper storage of foods.
  • Ensures cleanliness of work areas.
  • Responsible for preparing foods for Catering Service.
  • Assists in requisitioning supplies.
  • Participates in meetings to discuss food/menu related matters.
  • Provides courteous and tactful customer service to residents, families, staff, visitors and other patrons.
  • Participates in fire drills, evacuations and other safety measures.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Chef training or culinary management diploma or certification from a college of applied arts and technology or a private career college; and a certificate of qualification in the trade of Cook or Institutional Cook; or
  • Appropriate skills, knowledge and a minimum of 2 years experience in the fields of institutional, health care, restaurant or hospitality cooking to perform the duties required of the position
  • Current Safe Food Handling certification approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit

Skills/Abilities:

  • A genuine understanding of the needs of the frail and elderly is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Excellent project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to practice good lifting and safety and sanitation techniques
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Assets:

  • A demonstrated ability in leadership skills and supervision is an asset

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must be willing to work shift work, including weekends and holidays
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination at point of conditional offer
  • Prior to commencing employment, will be required to review and attest/affirm to all Pioneer Ridge Staff Immunization Policies
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Must have successfully undergone a "two step" tuberculosis skin test within the 12 months prior to employment
  • Prior to commencing employment, must undergo a successful Offence & Professional Misconduct Declaration Process
  • Must successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the Corporation on an annual basis
  • Must maintain current certification in Safe Food Handling approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit
