The opportunity

Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) is seeking a leader with a proven track record in trading rates products to join our Global Trading team. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in both cash and derivatives markets, offering strategic insights and guidance to portfolio management teams.

This role will play a critical part in shaping the team’s strategy and driving the growth of our global trading business.

Who you'll work with
  • The Global Trading team within the Total Fund Management department consists of three trading pods: Credit, Rates, and Liquids, in addition to the Trading Research and Analytics team.
  • The individual will be managing & leading the Rates trading team, reporting directly to the Senior Managing Director of Global Trading and Beta.
  • As manager of the rates trading team, you will provide leadership and drive strategic decision making in collaboration with the other Global Trading managers.
  • Ability to contribute to the Fixed Income Working Group that makes recommendations to CIO around Fixed Income exposures.
  • The rates trading team works closely with portfolio managers and partners with teams across both Capital Markets & Total Fund Management departments.

What you'll do

Your primary responsibility is to lead the Rates Trading team as both a manager and subject matter expert. You will monitor market trends, provide strategic insights to portfolio management processes, and enhance trading practices. This includes leveraging advancements in market structure, data analytics, and emerging technologies to deliver best-in-class execution.

Trading and Advisory
  • Lead and support all aspects of rates trading and Global Trading initiatives. Markets covered include CAD, USD, Euro and APAC.
  • Train and mentor junior talent, helping develop market expertise.
  • Maintain strong and professional broker/dealer relationships to ensure efficient coverage in all relevant markets.
  • Become a market expert in a broad array of products, such as government bonds, provincial bonds, SSAs, US Agency Mortgages. ASWs, inflation breakevens and related products, interest-rate swaps, cross-currency basis swaps, vol products (including swaptions/caps/floors), basis trades, futures, money market products, and repo.
  • Assist in the issuance of OTPP’s global debt programs
  • Transact orders and provide guidance to the rest of the team based on market analysis and knowledge of market conditions.
  • Collaborate with the portfolio managers throughout the investment process, helping formulate trade ideas and alternative deal structures to achieve best liquidity and execution.
  • Search for sources of liquidity and manage access to markets to minimize execution costs.
  • Support improvements in trading processes and new strategies, helping deliver key objectives of the broader trading team.
Data Analytics and Technology
  • Collaborate with the Trading Research & Analytics team to contribute and enhance pre/post-trades analytics including dealer selection, liquidity scoring & TCA.
  • Perform Technology intelligence in exploring, testing and recommending any venues and vendors that might improve trading capabilities.
Internal stakeholders
  • Assist in the development of policies/procedures designed to ensure compliance with all industry/regulatory requirements.
  • Partner and communicate with the broader team and departments to ensure appropriate parties are kept informed and engaged on transactions or initiatives.
  • Build close working relationships with IT, Operations, Legal/Compliance and Risk partners to ensure appropriate resolution of all issues related to the business.
What you'll need
  • 8+ years of experience with focus on rates trading, including cash and derivatives products (both linear and vol)
  • Experience mentoring, managing, and developing junior talent
  • Bachelor’s degree required, in a related field preferred (e.g.: Financial, Economics, Mathematical or other); Master’s degree would be an asset.
  • Understanding of Global Macro, Relative Value and systemic/model-driven strategies.
  • US Mortgage market knowledge and experience trading US agency mortgage products considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in trading tools (Bloomberg, MarketAxess, Tradeweb, CharlesRiver).
  • Ability to work under pressure and to handle multiple priorities while remaining detail oriented.
  • Good experience in data analytics to participate in pre- and post-trades analysis projects and improve cost analysis.
  • Demonstrate active listening, a proactive attitude and the ability to foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong ethics, regard for compliance and regulatory requirements.
