The Financial Controller (16 month contract) is responsible for all financial and fiscal aspects of business unit operations. This position will be responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements and supporting the VP of Finance.This position ensures deadlines for month-end, quarter-end and year-end are met.
The role is hybrid and requires at least 1 day per week in office at the Markham, ON or Montreal, QC location.
The contract has a 16-month term starting February 2025 to May, 31^st 2026.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and review of monthly closing and reporting information submitted to Corporate.
- Prepare, calculate and enter various month-end entries
- Update and reconcile month-end schedules
- Calculate commissions and bonuses
- Review and approval of all cash disbursements.
- Ensure compliance with reporting requirements as set by Corporate
- Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards
- Analyze cost controls and expenses to guide business decisions. Analyze financial statements to pinpoint potential weak areas.
- Review journal entries including recurring journal entries and allocations, account reconciliations and analysis.
- Coordinate the preparation of financial reports, special analyses, and information reports.
- Manage and calculate forecasting for all business units and consolidated reports
- Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advises on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience- Bachelor Degree with an emphasis in Accounting or Finance required.
- A minimum of five years total experience in financial statement preparation, reporting, budgeting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and account reconciliation, with public accounting firm experience a plus.
- Experience supervising one or more staff members for a minimum of two years is required.
- CPA is preferred although is not required
- Must be proficient in multiple software programs, including, but not limited to, Great Plains, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet.
- Ability to follow instructions and respond to managements’ directions accurately.
- Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality and monitors own work to ensure quality is met.
- Must demonstrate effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively and asking questions where clarification is needed.

- Ability to follow all company policies and procedures in effect at time of hire and as they may change or be added from time to time.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common to complex financial records, legal contracts and documents and tax information.
- Ability to write clearly and informatively and edit own work for appropriate spelling and grammar.
- Ability to respond appropriately and professionally to common inquiries or complaints from customers, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to write reports clearly and informatively and that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to effectively present information one-on-one, in small groups, members of management, and/or clients or vendors of the company.
